Designed to nurture learning, wellbeing and independence, the new Education Support Centre provides a calm and welcoming environment tailored to the diverse needs of its students. The building brings together contemporary learning spaces, administration and therapy facilities, life-skills areas and outdoor learning environments within a cohesive and highly supportive setting. Every aspect of the design has been carefully considered to create a safe, engaging and inclusive environment that empowers students to learn, develop confidence and build essential life skills.

The design draws inspiration from the surrounding landscape, embracing biophilic design principles to strengthen connections between students and the natural environment. The building’s architectural expression responds directly to its setting through a carefully curated palette of natural colours, textures and materials. The face brickwork references the distinctive texture and patterning of the surrounding eucalyptus trees, reinterpreting the mottled appearance and layered character of native bark within a contemporary educational setting. Tactile edges and textured surfaces along the façade support intuitive wayfinding and provide visual cues that assist students in navigating the building. Above the robust brick base, lightweight framed elements clad in pre-finished metal sheeting create a refined and durable exterior that complements the existing campus. An expressive roof form introduces abundant natural light deep into the building, while the outdoor maker space, amphitheatre and adjoining grassed areas foster opportunities for outdoor learning, exploration and connection with nature.

The spatial arrangement was carefully developed in collaboration with the school and guided by the ASPECTSS™ framework to support sensory regulation, independence and functional learning. The floor plan is organised according to levels of activity, sensory input and function, creating a logical sequence of spaces that promotes clarity and ease of use. Classrooms are grouped together within a dedicated learning wing, connected by breakout spaces and smaller nooks that provide opportunities for both collaboration and retreat. These spaces are strategically positioned adjacent to the maker space and multipurpose life-skills area, encouraging hands-on learning and the development of practical skills. Administration, therapy and staff spaces are located near the main entry, establishing a transition zone that supports students as they move from the external environment into focused learning settings.

A soft and calming interior palette is complemented by layered textures, warm timber finishes and acoustic treatments that enhance comfort, concentration and wellbeing. Natural materials and muted tones have been carefully selected to minimise visual clutter and reduce sensory overload, creating an environment that feels both welcoming and secure. Darker retreat spaces and low-stimulus rooms provide opportunities for respite and self-regulation, while integrated skills-based learning environments support independence and encourage active engagement. Material selections have been chosen to reduce glare and improve visual comfort, while abundant natural daylight and views to landscaped outdoor areas further reinforce the building’s biophilic design principles. Together, these elements create a learning environment that supports a wide range of sensory and educational needs.

The circulation strategy prioritises safety, predictability and ease of navigation. Wide corridors, generous intersections and curved corners improve sightlines and reduce unexpected encounters, helping students move confidently throughout the building. Wayfinding is reinforced through the considered use of materials, texture and spatial hierarchy, creating an environment that is legible and intuitive for all users. The inclusion of dedicated low-stimulus spaces and smaller breakout areas throughout the building provides students with choice and flexibility, supporting emotional regulation and individual learning preferences.

The new Education Support Centre delivers a purpose-built facility that supports students, staff and families while strengthening the broader school community. Through thoughtful planning, sensory-responsive design and a strong connection to nature, the project creates an environment that is both inspiring and supportive. By combining robust, low-maintenance construction with a carefully considered educational framework, the Centre provides a lasting asset for the school and a place where students can thrive academically, socially and emotionally for years to come.
